I first took notice of rug hooking in the craft and antique shops in St. John’s. The idea of “painting” in 3D with fibres on a burlap backing opened up a new world to me. The softness and closeness of the fibres along with the ebb and flow of every loop are soothing to my senses and something I can get lost in, like a meditation. My passion for rug hooking truly began during the Christmas of 2005, when, after receiving a hook, burlap, and a 10-minute lesson, I was instantly hooked. The subject matter of my work is deeply personal to me, while wide-ranging. Through my work, I depict how I’m feeling about my place in the world and how this feeling continues to evolve as a woman now firmly in middle age.
