"Much of my recent research looks at the fragility of human and natural systems. Pottery shards, which are ubiquitous on Newfoundland beaches where they record the ebb and flow of human activity, have been a recurring theme in this research. Specifically, I have used pottery shards when talking about patterns of settlement and resettlement, about diasporas, and about the process of disintegration. In my work Shards I reassembled found pottery fragments into ephemeral arrangements in resettled communities, and in my series Rangifer Sapiens I drew a line connecting human and animal habitats by using shards in sculptures. My new work, Weight, explores a potentially more constructive vision. The messaging I received as a young person was that there was nothing in Newfoundland – no money, no jobs, no future. And yet, after much time away, I nevertheless returned to stitch together a life in rural Newfoundland." Join us in the CCNL Gallery (155 Water St., second floor) for a public opening reception from 2pm to 4pm on Saturday, February 7th.
