Sophie will talk about two durational projects that explored human-ecosystem interactions, the limits of human language, and invited ecosystems and various other-than-human agents to rework, edit, and otherwise influence the work. Interview with a river saw her interviewing a range of biotic agents, such as otters, trees, and deer, seeking ways to listen to a river system. Your silence creates a world for my language examined the relations between gender-based violence and the ecological impact of the invasive emerald ash borer. Sophie will share short video works and images of these installation-based and site-specific projects, and talk about her process and her engagement with a range of materials, from clay to cloth, ink to ice.
